In low-income neighborhoods the ratio is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children

WHAT: Bess the Book Bus, a mobile literacy outreach program, is rolling through San Diego to share the joy of reading and deliver nearly 2,000 books to 100 San Diego Boys & Girls Club children who need them most.

San Diego is the 31st city Bess the Book Bus will stop at as part of its nationwide “Summer of Good Reads and Good Deeds” tour in which children at Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs and Indian reservations will receive more than 20,000 new and gently used books. ‘Bess’ is visiting 52 super lucky cities in 68 days this summer.

With help from www.Superpages.com and the SuperYellowPages, Jennifer Frances, creator of Bess the Book Bus, is visiting a local Boys & Girls Club where kids, age 5-18, will have the opportunity to get on Bess the Book Bus, pick out their favorite to take home and then listen to Frances read a few of her favorite books.

 WHEN: Monday, July 6, 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, 1430 D Avenue, National City, CA 91950.

DETAILS: Frances began Bess the Book Bus, Inc. in 2004 in honor of her grandmother, Bess O’Keefe, who taught her the joy and importance of reading at a young age.
