On May 24, at the City of San Diego Historical Resources Board’s 2012 Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony over a dozen individuals received “Cultural Landscape” awards for their efforts to restore and repaint a selection of Chicano Park’s world-famous murals. Award recipients included, from left to right, front row, Ismael “Pye” Salazar (Caltrans), Marty Rosen (former Caltrans employee who wrote the proposal for the $1.6 million federal grant that funds the restoration), Yasue Sano, Tommie Camarillo (Chair of the Chicano Park Steering Committee that co-sponsored the proposal), Mario Torero, Ricardo Duffy (Oversight Manager for Ghirardelli Associates), Armando Nuñez, Salvador Torres (mural artist who was instrumental in the initiation and planning of the grant proposal), Salvador Barajas, and Norma Montoya; back row, Guillermo Rosette, and Victor Ochoa. Unless otherwise designated all those named above are mural artists. Also present at the ceremony but not pictured was artist Felipe Adame. Unable to attend were award recipients and muralists Guillermo Aranda, Juanishi Orosco, Esteban Villa, José Montoya, Michael Schnorr, Mario Chacon, and Celia Rodriguez. (Photo: David Avalos)
