To Mexam Person:
As a South American or Venezuelan American myself, I am too a Catholic and believe in Our Lady of Guadalupe. My wife is Mexican and her mother is from Venezuela. We both have graduated from college and have good jobs. Perhaps, more latinos or hispanics would be able to attend college and have a 'better lifetyle' if our Congress would make a total reform in immigration. Therefore, I do not agree with you on this particular issue. As far as the 'fairy tales' is concerned, if the Vatican and the Pope has given it some credit, then there has to be some legitimacy to it. And as far as being religious or giving money to the local Catholic Churh, it really does not measure how successful a latino or hispanic may be in College or in their community. If anything that is a right that any citizen has with respect to their own religion.

Is it really a stereotype to think of Mexicans and Mexicans-Americans as backward? Let's see, they have the lowest rates of high school graduation and college graduation in the US. They regularly show up on the bottom end of practically all studies that measure standards of living in the US. For every 900,000 people in its population, the USA has producted a Nobel Prize Laureate. For every 30 million of its population, Mexico has produced a Nobel Prize Laureate. Hmm. Could it be that the stereotypes of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans being backward might have a kernal of truth in them? Maybe if they took all the time they spent worshiping Roman Catholic fantasies and invested it in studying they might be better served. Maybe if they took all the money they spend on Roman Catholic churches and rituals and celebrations and instead invested it funds for college education, they might advance more. Over 90% of the Mexican population identifies itself as Roman Catholic. Roman Catholicism is irrational because it is based on non-verifiable beliefs. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that most Mexicans are irrational. It is not a stereotype. While it is possible to be intelligent and have irrational beliefs (witness Francis Collins) it is not likely that the irrational beliefs will not affect one's intelligence nor one's actions (witness Francis Collins). Regarding your Loma Linda example, I am not familiar with that place so I cannot speak to it.

Lauren: Beautifully and brilliantly stated. Thank you.

Mr. Mex-Am:

Let us not, once again, construct a formulaic set of characteristics, which impose irrational behavior on an entire culture. Religious fantasies are compartmentalized and do not fairly represent the intelligence of an individual. Take Loma Linda University Medical Center into consideration, leading the industry with cutting-edge infant heart transplants and proton-beam radiation therapy, and yet… they cannot seem to shake the idea that a women named Ellen G. White prophesied the civil war and speaks on behalf of God. Intelligence and the ability to believe irrational things exist independently of each other. Do not risk letting these fairly tales define the future of your own people, as that, by definition, is the true stereotype.

It's precisely this kind of supernatural and superstitious nonsense that keeps Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in a perpetual state of looking backwards and never forwards.

Excuse me but there is no scientific nor historical evidence that the Virgin Mary ever existed anywhere. The Virgen of Guadalupe is just a story made-up by the Spaniards to finish their conquest of the indigenous people of Mexico. With this made-up story the Spaniards ensnared the hearts and minds of the Mexicas and other indigenous groups when they were in a traumatized and vulnerable psychological state.

And as the above article shows, Mexicans and Chicanos are no closer to freeing their minds from superstitious nonsense than they were 500 years ago. It's too bad because there are lots of Mexicans and Chicanos that are actually very smart but somehow all of that intelligence gets short-circuited by faith-based, deterministic, victim-consciousness superstition based on the Virgen de Guadalupe.

Mexicans and Chicanos could really advance economically, politically and educationally if they could just free their minds from the Roman Catholic fairy-tales.

Lauren, What an informative and well written article. In all my years in San Diego and being around the Mexican culture I did not know about this celebration and the back story. Thank you for enlighten me. Congratulations on being published and Merry Christmas! Sharon
