By Dottie Fieger, Adjutant, MCL Scuttlebutt Det. #886

Marines will be Marines. And things happen when you unite Marine “plank owners” with retired and former Marines. The groups embarked on a proud mission to leave a Marine footprint to honor the Navy/Marine Corps Team aboard the USS San Diego (LPD 22), which will be commissioned at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19th at the Broadway Pier.

“Legacies cost money and that’s when our retired and former Marines gladly stepped in,” said Detachment Commandant Dan Anderson, of the Marine Corps League Scuttlebutt Detachment #886. The membership of Scuttlebutt Detachment provided the necessary funds to help make the Marine plank owners’ dream come true.

The USS San Diego is a 684 foot amphibious warship that transports Marines and equipment on missions abroad. The crew is comprised of 360 naval personnel. This includes the only three Marines who work in the Combat Cargo Department. Under the leadership of GySgt Ricardo Saldana, these Marines designed and created an impressive plaque to be mounted on the wall of the Chief’s Mess (dining area) where senior enlisted Marines and Navy Chiefs (E-7’s and above) will break bread together.

The plaque bears the Marine Corps emblem of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. “Semper Fidelis” is emblazoned above the emblem and the Marine Corps rank insignias (E-7 to E-9) are mounted below the emblem. The words Semper Fidelis mean “Always Faithful” and characterize the Marines’ pledge of fidelity to their country and fellow Marines.

San Marcos — California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) will welcome internationally-renowned playwright, director and social rights activist Luis Valdez for a guest lecture on Tuesday, May 1 at 6 p.m. in Arts 111 to discuss the birth of the Chicano theater movement and its continued relevance nearly 50 years later. Held in honor of International Workers’ Day, the event is free and open to the public.

Born in Delano, California in 1940, Valdez is the founder of the El Tea-tro Campesino (translation: The Farmworkers Theater) and is revered to be the father of Chicano theater in the United States. In 1965, he joined César Chávez in his effort to educate and organize farmworkers into a viable union, where Valdez wrote and performed brief satirical sketches and plays relevant to the civil rights struggles of migrants. His plays deliver powerful social or political messages and frequently infuse humor to attack the opposition. His published plays, actos and films include Zoot Suit, La Bamba, La Pastorela and I Am Joaquín, among others. He is most notably known for Zoot Suit, which debuted on Broadway in 1979 making Valdez the first Chicano director to premiere on the Broadway stage. The play was later adapted into a film in 1981.

Valdez’s visit to campus is sponsored by CSUSM’s Arts and Lectures series, the Theatre Arts Program, Social Justice & Equity Project, Center ARTES and National Latino Research Program. Admission is free and open to the community.

Where: California State University San Marcos, Arts Building, Room 111, 333 South Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos.

Linda Carlton, principal of San Ysidro Adult School, was recently recognized by the YWCA of San Diego as a Tribute to Women in Industry (TWIN) Mentor award honoree.

The TWIN Mentor award is given to outstanding professional women who have a track record of supporting women in the workplace and helping them achieve their potential.

“Linda Carlton is a dynamic educator who has inspired hundreds of adult learners and novice teachers by providing career guidance and advancement opportunities,” said School Board President Pearl Quiñones. “It’s because of her exemplary leadership that she was recently named lead principal for the district’s adult school division.”

An educator with the Sweetwater District for 31 years, Ms. Carlton has motivated hundreds of adult learners to gain job skills, study for the U.S. Citizenship exam, polish their English or earn a high school or general education diploma through adult school classes.

She’s been instrumental in developing courses in business, health occupations and culinary arts.

In addition to inspiring thousands of students during her career, she has also mentored dozens of teachers.
As regional manager of the California Project for Adult Literacy she has coordinated workshops and trained hundreds of adult education teachers in subjects ranging from working with learning disabled adults to helping adults set short term and long range goals for accomplishing their educational goals.

Ms. Carlton is known for going above and beyond the call of duty to serve her students. When she became principal in 2008, she recognized that the demand for classes exceeded the available budget, classroom space and course offerings. She decided to create a computer learning lab where students can drop in between 8 am to 8 pm four days a week to get ahead. The lab is now used by several hundred students each week.

Imperial Beach Library Launches Free Citizenship Classes

The Imperial Beach Library, 810 Imperial Beach Blvd, is launching free Citizenship Classes taking place every Saturday from 10 – 11:30 a.m. The classes are conducted in English and all materials are provided free of charge. Registration is not required.

The Citizenship Classes include help filling out the N-400 application, practicing the 100 civics questions, and everything attendees need to know to pass their citizenship interview. In addition, the classes assist with English reading, writing, and conversation skills. San Diego County Library branches held 228 Citizenship Class sessions last year, with 1,724 learners in attendance. A video featuring SDCL’s Citizenship Classes can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/countysandiego#p/a/u/0/ae7oVXn6YYQ.

“I attended the library’s classes for almost a year and passed a test that included answering questions on American history and civics along with reading and writing,” said Rosalba Trevizo (pictured), who became a citizen through classes offered at the Vista Branch. “My confidence in myself has never been higher.”

Preservation Action Alert: Plaza de Panama Project hearings begin on May 3
The Balboa Park Committee
May 3, 2012 at 6pm

Presenting the proposed Plaza de Panama Jacobs/Sanders project

After nearly two years of battling this destructive, poorly designed, environmentally, culturally, and historically damaging redevelopment and privatization of Balboa Park project it will now move forward to a series of public hearings that will decide the fate of Balboa Park. These important meetings begin with the Balboa Park Committee on Thursday, May 3 at 6pm at the Balboa Park Club, 2144 Pan America Road West.

We need your help to make sure the public’s voice continues to be heard. A strong showing of public support will make it harder for boards, commissions, and council to bow to private party wishes to go against the public’s needs, and to ignore the wishes and desires of the public to protect our park. Please plan to be at this first meeting to speak.
The best way to keep most current is to join the facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/PlazaDePanama2015

N. Diane Moss, Project New Village CEO, announced that the 12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Community Tribute will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Educational Cultural Complex located at 4343 Ocean View Blvd. from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The event will feature a “day of dialogue” focusing on the opportunities and benefits of urban agriculture in Southeastern San Diego.

“Since 2010, Project New Village and other food justice activists have been working to build our good food legacies campaign in Southeastern San Diego,” Moss said. “Our campaign is dedicated to providing opportunities for community members to reclaim a local food and agriculture history that includes growing, growing, sharing, selling, distributing, and eating healthy food from the backyards and undeveloped lots of Southeastern San Diego.”

According to Moss, this year’s community tribute has two main emphases: to honor the life, legacy and lessons of Cesar E. Chavez and to commemorate of World Earth Day.

“We believe that our stewardship of the earth begins and ends with our efforts to build and sustain healthy communities and as such we believe that it is our time to discuss food equity and urban agriculture as catalysts for job creation, better health and community building,” explained Moss. “This is the essence of what we are calling the good food legacies mobilization campaign.”

Organized under the auspices the People’s Produce Project, the signature initiative of Project New Village, the day of dialogue will convene experts featuring members of academia, the county’s Health and Human Services agency, the local economic development corporation, and a local food buyer, who will talk about the benefits of the production, selling and consuming of locally grown produce. Additionally, there will be cultural expressions, a healthy lunch provided by the owners of Alchemy Restaurant, an organic eatery located in South Park and a community awards presentation.

“The culmination of the day’s activities will be a community dialogue, whereby community members and local food justice advocates will weigh in on the discussion. We will then ask for a commitment from those in attendance to support urban agriculture – related issues in the upcoming months, “she said. “Our overall goal is to develop opportunities to build on and build up the land in our community.”

From its brand new facilities, C3 Performing Arts Center launched its inaugural School of Music program on Tuesday, March 27. A different kind of music program, the School of Music is a free eight-week instructional program where students of all ages can choose to take lessons for guitar, bass, piano, drums, flute or voice taught by professional musicians.

With the exception of a one-time $20 registration fee, the lessons are free. A student recital will culminate at the end of the eight weeks and friends and family will be invited to attend the showcase at the Performing Arts Center.

“The School of Music is such an amazing program and there really is nothing like it in San Diego,” said David Higgins, C3 PAC founder. “Professional musicians from around San Diego are volunteering their time to teach what they are most passionate about in hopes to carry on the gift of music and the arts.”

Instead of focusing on one form of art, C3 PAC encompasses every step and aspect of the world of creativity and expression. In addition to its 400-seat theater, the building offers a cafe, bookstore, lesson rooms for drums, piano and guitar with all equipment already in-house, a dance studio, recording studio, media arts classroom, nursery, an entertainment and game area, and a room designated for jam sessions.

“With so many schools no longer able to provide music and art classes, there is a true need for a place like C3 PAC that encourages artistic expression,” said Higgins. “We are excited to not only grow our presence in the community but also provide a place that inspires and helps spread creativity all throughout the greater San Diego area.”

At the end of the School of Music, students will have the opportunity to continue with the C3 PAC’s Build-a-Band program where they will get to write and record their own music with a band made of students from the School.
Opened in February, C3 PAC has affordable prices for renting performance space and music lessons, and, with all that it provides for budding, hopeful and established artists, this facility stands alone in the city of San Diego. In addition to the School of Music, C3 PAC will host a myriad of events and offers space for private teachers, freelance artists and community organizations to rent, create and share. For more information, visit www.c3pac.com or call 702-241-7608.

On March 24, the Vista Community Clinic will hold a 40th Anniversary gala of “Health & Hope” to celebrate the opening of the 31,000-square-foot Joan and Ron Moss Women’s Center and 40 years of health services as a North County safety net for uninsured people who seek medical care due to economic, social or cultural barriers. The new facility doubles the size of the Vale Terrace branch and boosts capacity for patient visits to 270,000 a year in the network of five clinic locations throughout Vista and Oceanside. One in four Vista residents and one in eight in Oceanside residents receive care at Vista Community Clinic. In 2011, more than 57,000 people were served by Vista Community Clinic.

“We are proud of the high-quality, cost-effective medical care we have been able to provide to so many people who would otherwise not have a medical home where they can access basic prevention screenings and acute medical care when they need it,” said CEO Barbara Mannino, who has directed the private, non-profit Vista Community Clinic since 1983. “It also gives me great pleasure to recognize people like the Moss’s who have supported us and remained loyal to our mission for more than two decades.”

Mannino explained that the Clinic started in 1972 with very humble roots. Eight dedicated volunteers saw patients in donated space at the Vista dog pound and pharmaceutical reps offered samples for patient medications. The new Wo-men’s Center, named for North County donors Joan and Ron Moss, culminates a $21 million expansion project that was two years in the making and partially funded by an $11.4 million federal grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services through a competitive review process made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new facility adds 24 exam rooms and will support medical care and educational outreach programs for up to 70,000 patients who use the Clinic.

Women’s health care services at the Center include prenatal and obstetrical services, family planning, screenings for breast cancer and cervical cancer, referrals for mammograms and other specialty services and links to health education services such as coronary disease prevention, diabetes self-management, parenting education, prenatal education, childhood obesity, treatments for a wide variety of diseases, immunizations and dental care. At full staff, the Women’s Center will house eight physicians and nurse practitioners with specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as 70 health educators, community outreach workers, social workers and case managers.

The goal of the clinic expansion is to increase the capacity to serve low-income, uninsured or underinsured individuals in North County.

Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to extending basic human rights to everyone. His legacy will be celebrated with remembrances, discussion, and a documentary from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in the Escondido Public Library Turrentine Room at 239 S. Kalmia Street, Escondido 92025.

The event will include comments by Julian Nava, who served as Ambassador to Mexico, and Marco Lopez, former general counsel of the UFW, AFL-CIO. The award-winning PBS documentary “The Fight in the Fields” will be shown.

Farris’ most recent book of short stories, “BOYS-GIRLS,” is a visceral trip through the fairy tale genre for adults. From metamorphosis to Cyclops, devils, freaks, lions, a boy with one wing, the invention of love, Farris channels Henry Miller and Anais Nin in a new zeitgeist, re-creating the fairy tale aesthetic originally intended for big kids.

Scenes like these from the 1850s and 1860s frontier will come to life at the sixth annual “Vallecito Days” at Vallecito Stage Station County Park Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11.

The festival runs 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

“This is one of our most interesting events all year, and it’s worth the trip to the desert,” County Parks and Recreation Director Brian Albright said. “Most San Diego County residents don’t realize that Vallecito once hosted thousands of travelers who sought their fortunes out west and a 1,500 man California unit on its way to fight in the Civil War.”

It’s been 150 years since Union army’s “California Column” marched from California to Texas along the well-travelled Southern Overland Trail and stopped to camp at the Vallecito Stage Station. This year’s Vallecito Days commemorates the anniversary with a Civil War infantry squad marching into the station once more and inviting the public to tour their camp at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Mountain men—independent trappers, hunters and explorers who adventured along the Southern Overland Trail, will also show off their camp.

Vallecito Days will feature tours of the restored Vallecito Stage Station, which was once a bustling stop for the San Antonio-San Diego Mail and the Butterfield Overland Stage service that carried mail and passengers between 1857 and 1861.

At the weekend celebration, volunteers in period attire will demonstrate frontier cooking, soap making, laundering, archery, fire-starting techniques, surveying, and spinning and weaving.

Exhibits will display antique firearms and other equipment. Folk singer George Maverick will perform throughout the weekend.

Visitors are encouraged to join the fun by dressing in 1850s and 1860s attire.

Vallecito Days is a cooperative effort between San Diego County Parks and Recreation, California State Parks, the Ramona Trails Association, the Save Our Heritage Organization and the local unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California.

Vallecito Stage Station County Park is located at 37349 Great Southern Stage Route (mile marker 34-35), Julian, 92036.
