Author Gary Soto will be a special guest at MiraCosta College’s 2013 Reading Festival, to be held February 26 and 27 at the college’s Community Learning Center, 1831 Mission Avenue, Oceanside. The event is free and open to the public.
Soto is a Mexican-American author and poet, and a lifetime lover of books and reading. He grew up working the fields of the San Joaquin Valley and in factories in Fresno. He is the author of many poetry collections and novels for adults and children, most notably New and Selected Poems, a 1995 finalist for both the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the National Book Award. His poems have appeared in many literarymagazines, including Ploughshares, Michigan Quarterly, Poetry International, and Poetry, which honored him with the Bess Hokin Prize and the Levinson Award.
“You can always spot bright people. They are reading a book,” he is fond of saying.
At the Reading Festival, Soto will read from his books and will follow-up with a question and answer session and a book signing.
The 2013 Reading Festival will be held Tuesday,February 26, 6:30–9 p.m., and Wednesday, February 27, 9:30 a.m.–noon.
