Reading The Grapes of Wrath at Lemon Grove Library

October a Month for Californians to Explore and Celebrate their State’s Social History

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of John Steinbeck, all Californians are being invited to read John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. The “California Stories: Reading The Grapes of Wrath” project is designed to strengthen California communities, by bringing people together to read John Steinbeck’s classic novel, discuss parallels between the book and today’s issues, and share stories about their experiences as Californians.

“California Stories: Reading the Grapes of Wrath is a project of the California Council for the Humanities, in partnership with the California Center for the Book and the California State Library and California public libraries. The Friends of Lemon Grove Library and the Lemon Grove Historical Society have also provided financial support to complement a state grant received by the Lemon Grove Library in support of the following “Grapes of Wrath” events:

Tuesday, October 1, 7:00-9:00 p.m.: Introduction to Grapes of Wrath Celebration: Join Terry Tallent, John Steinbeck expert, as he presents information on Steinbeck and the significance of The Grapes of Wrath. Refreshments served.

Tuesday, October 8, 7:00-9:00 p.m.: Come to the drive-in! Screening of the 1940 John Ford Film, ”Grapes of Wrath,” starring Henry Fonda. Bring a jacket for the outdoor showing. Popcorn served! Moderator: Jack Ofield of San Diego State University Film Department.

Tuesday, October 15, 7:00-9:00 p.m.: “Coming to California.” Panel discussion, led by Lemon Grove Historical Society President. Panel of recent and historical immigrants to California, including Dr. Robert Alvarez, UCSD professor and descendent of early immigrants to Lemon Grove. How did we come here? What has been our experience here? Refreshments served.

Tuesday, October 22, 7:00-9:00 p.m.: “Migrant Farmworkers in California: History and Music,” by Chunky Sanchez y Los Alacranes. Screening of United Farm Workers film, “The Wrath of Grapes”. Refreshments served.

Wednesday, October 30, 7:00-9:00 p.m.: “Music of the Dust Bowl Era.” By professional musicians and historians Keith and Rusty McNeil. Refreshments served.

The Lemon Grove Library is located at 8073 Broadway in Lemon Grove.
