Mini-Grants for Center City San Diego

Community residents are eligible to apply for Mini-Grants that range from $500-$5,000 to improve and strengthen their neighborhoods or volunteer as part of the Grant Selection Committee (volunteers to review, evaluate and select awardees). It is all about residents changing and making decisions about their own neighborhoods.

The eligible residents and neighborhoods are of the “Diamond Neighborhood,” Chollas View, Emerald Hills, Lincoln Park, Mount Hope, Mountain View, Oak Park, North Encanto, South Encanto, Valencia Park, and Webster.

If you, your family, or anyone you know live in one of the above communities and would like to find out more, attend one of the Application Orientations on Tuesday, October 1, 2002, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Malcolm X Library or on Saturday, October 12, 2002 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Lincoln High School. The application deadline is November 1, 2002.

Senator Boxer Launches Hispanic Heritage Month Webpage

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced that she has launched a special webpage in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The webpage highlights the influence of Hispanic history and cultures on the United States.

“I am pleased to launch this webpage,” Senator Boxer said. “The Hispanic history, culture and people have made great impacts on California and our nation. I hope all Californians will log on to my webpage and learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month.”

In addition to general information about Hispanic heritage, the page contains links to information about Hispanic Congressional members including Ramualdo Pacheco, the first Hispanic elected to Congress from California. The page also features links to information about Latin American art, contributions to science and technology and California missions.

Tiny Tot Registration at El Toyon Recreation Center

The National City Recreation Department will take registrations for the Tiny Tot 2002 fall session on Tuesday, October 1 between the hours of 9 am and 12 pm, at the El Toyon Recreation Center, 2005 East 4th Street in National City.

Tiny Tots must have been born in 1998 (4 years old) to participate in the program. Fees are $40.00 for National City residents/$60.00 for non-residents.

Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. The morning class meets from 8:30 am - 11:15 am and the afternoon class meets from 12:00 pm - 2:45 pm. Class size is limited to 18 students per class. The ten-week fall session runs from October 8-December 19, 2002.

Applicants are asked to bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate to verify age, and proof of residency. National City residents have priority on registration day. For additional information call the National City Recreation Department at 336-4290.

1,000 Family Church Rummage Sale in Hillcrest!

The First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego will hold a huge 1,000 Family Church Rummage Sale on Saturday, October 5 from 7 am to 3 pm at the Church. The Church is located in Hillcrest directly across the street from the front entrance of the UCSD Medical Center.

The sale will feature gently used books, clothing, sporting good & exercise equipment, housewares, music & video, electronics & computers, toys & games, baby items and much, much more!

There will be a separate Boutique for upscale clothing, art, antiques, jewelry and collectibles.

The spacious five-acre church campus will be filled with gently used quality merchandise price to sell!! Food and beverages will be sold for the convenience of our shoppers.
