Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández to Perform in Escondido

ESCONDIDO - Direct from the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, the “Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández” returns to the United States to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a 22-city tour that will include a performance at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Thursday, September 19.

Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández is a celebration of life in movement, music and color. Its many dances encompass pre-Hispanic rituals, dramatic events from Mexico’s past, and colorful depictions of Mexico’s diverse culture and folklore. Drawing from the rich and varied repertoire of Amalia Hernández, Latin America’s most important choreographer, the selection of dances for the company’s 50th Anniversary season presents brilliant theatrics with great passion.

This commemorative anniversary year, “the best of the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández,” is being celebrated throughout the world, including a 50-City Tour within Mexico; and a World Tour including visits to Japan, Europe, South America and 22 cities throughout the United States.

Amalia Hernández, who died in November 2000, is a pioneer in the world of dance having created an unprecedented art form. Prior to “Ballet Folklorico,” there was classical ballet and folk dance. Ms. Hernández understood that in bringing the folk traditions to the stage there was the need to combine the spirit and the nature of the dance with some of the elements developed for stage by classical ballet and by different expressions of modern and contemporary dance.

During the past 50 years, Ms. Hernández worked with such great Mexican musicians as Chavez and Revueltas; muralists and painters as Covarrubias and Siqueiros; choreographers and dancers as Martha Graham, Alvin Nicolai and Nureyev. But her basic well was the rich and diverse popular culture of Mexico.

Today, the Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández continues to grow and develop under the direction of her daughter Norma Lopez and her grandson Salvador Lopez. The Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández has performed for 42 years at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City.
