Friends of Scott Foundation is a new organization, founded by Carmen and Henry Delgadillo, aiming to assist families dealing with childhood cancer. Carmen and Henry know first-hand how childhood cancer affects families their son, Scott Delgadillo, lost his battle with Leukemia in January of 2001.
“September 17th will mark what would have been Scott’s 17th birthday,” said Carmen Delgadillo. “Even though it’s almost been three years, I can still hear him saying to me ‘Mom, don’t give up on me. I’m not done here yet’. I knew we had to do something to continue Scott’s legacy.”
Friends of Scott Foundation is committed to providing some of the emotional and financial support needed by families facing childhood cancer, as well as some social activities for all members of the family.
Many San Diegans remember Scott Delgadillo. Scott loved and was inspired by the University of Notre Dame. In fact, it was when his wish was granted to attend a home game against intrastate rival Purdue, that he gained media attention. Bob Davie, then the head coach, had asked Scott to “speak from the heart” and give an impromptu speech at the pep rally the night before the big game. Scott did. His words of faith, hope, encouragement and what the Notre Dame football team meant to him touched everyone in attendance. The football team dedicated that game to Scott and went on to be victorious 23 to 21.
“During Scott’s battle, he often would say ‘God must have chosen me for a reason’ and we believe he did” said Henry Delgadillo. “Scott knew how to make a difference and we want to continue to do that in his name.”
Founded in September 2003, Friends of Scott Foundation’s mission is to ease some of the burdens facing underprivileged families with a child afflicted with cancer. Friends of Scott Foundation is dedicated to the community of San Diego and the service areas of Children’s Hospital San Diego.
