Kid’s Day at the Airport

No need to beg for an airplane ride on this day! Experienced pilots of the Experimental Aircraft Association, through their Young Eagles program, will offer flights to kids 7-17 with parental permission. “Big” kids who are Museum members or join the Museum that day can also sign up for a chance to fly with The Antique Airplane Association, and Barnstorming Adventures of Palomar Airport will also be offering rides for a fee.

If you’d rather just watch, popular airshow performer John Collver returns this year with exciting aerial demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in his North American AT-6 War Dog.

There’s plenty to see on the ground with classic and special interest aircraft on display including Dick Fields’ and Jim Bergman’s T-6s, the large yellow Russian Antonov biplane, “The Big Panda,” and unique helicopters from Classic Rotors of Ramona. The Beggar’s Opera

The Beggar’s Opera is a wicked exposé of London criminal life as well as a political satire. It tells a story of a highwayman named MacHeath who has two ladies in love with him, and who eventually married them both. Through the magic of theater, MacHeath is spared from hanging for his crimes by the applause of the audience.

“Beasts and Bones”

** The William D. Cannon Art Gallery will present the exhibition “Beasts and Bones: The Cartonería of the Linares Family” from September 12 through November 5, 2004. Using simple materials, the family of artists melds playful forms of skeletal figures (calavera) and fantastic, mythical beasts (alebrije) into imaginative one of a kind sculptures. The exhibition features over 70 papier-maché sculptures borrowed from the Museum of Man in San Diego. Cartoneria is a long tradition in Mexico but now is carried on by only a few folk artists, called carto-neros, who make fanciful papier-maché objects for major celebrations during the year, most notably Easter Week and the Day of the Dead. The Gallery is located at 1775 Dove Lane off El Camino Real. For more information call (760) 434-2904.
