Bienvenida en los Grammys

Suntuosa y vibrante antesala en el Shrine

Soprendentemente civilizada estuvo la alfombra “verde” de los Grammys latinos, celebrados el pasado Jueves en el Shrine Auditorium de Los Angeles. Verde, ya que el auspiciador del evento, una conocida marca de cerveza americana, introdujo el nuevo concepto, el cual dejaba una extraña silueta en la cara de las estrellas.

Algunas de ellas también llevaban un “pin” verde, que simbolizaba la devoción a la cerveza. Más que mal gusto, el gesto dejaba mucho que desear. De quién se podía esperar de todo esa tarde fue la nominada Paulina Rubio, despampanante en un vestido rojo de su amigo Emmanuel Úngaro, el cual dejaba ver su menuda figura en pleno. “Si gano se lo voy a dedicar a mi mamá, que tanto me quiere” declaró la chica dorada a los medios.

Prácticamente todas las féminas (Alejandra Guzmán, Candela Ferro, la actríz americana Jessica Simpson, Mariana Seoane) llegaron sin sus respectivas parejas al espectáculo. La protagonista de “Mean Girls” Lindsay Lohan llegó al lado de su primer novio oficial, el venezolano Wilmer Valderrama, quien realiza el personaje de Fez en “That 70´s Show”.

El que sí llegó estupendamente acompañado de su imponente esposa es uno de los cantantes más nominados del Grammy este año, Robi Draco Rosa. “No me importa si gano o no. Lo importante es venir a celebrar con mis amigos”, explicó Rosa, quien tiene la fiesta post-grammy más caliente en el Doheny States de Beverly Hills.

La animadora y actríz Candela Ferro lució espectacular en un modelo del diseñador del patio Louis Verdad. “El fue el que propuso esto y me pareció lo más divertido para llevar. Él ya había vestido a Madonna en los premios de MTV. “Van a oir mucho más de él”, dijo Ferro.

Otra que lució como una sirena es la primeriza cantante Mariana Seoane, vestida por el diseñador mexicano Héctor Torrejos. “Bueno, imagínate, ya el sólo hecho de estar aquí es lo mejor que me pudiera pasar. Yo no necesito ganar, ya gané con mi presencia” explicó Mariana.

Tom Tancredo, Colorado congressman and head of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, came to New York to deliver another message. On the surface the men appear to represent opposite sides of the Republican platform on immigration, with Schwarzenegger holding out the American Dream center stage, while Tancredo rages about the coming immigration nightmare from stage (extreme) right.

34th Anniversary Celebration of the Chicano Moratorium
This past Sunday, August 29th, was the commemoration of the 34th Anniversary of Chicano Moratorium against the Vietnam War in 1970. The gathering in San Diego took place at Chicano Perk café and Cultural Center on 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, coinciding with other such events took place across the state. The celebration recalled when 30,000 people of Latino origin walked the streets of Los Angeles to ask for the Vietnam War to end and for better opportunities for this very neglected and discriminated community.

El pasado miércoles, 1 de septiembre el Presidente de la República Lic. Vicente Fox Quezada, rindió su cuarto informe de gobierno a la nación, con una duración de aproximadamente 1 hora y 17 minutos. Muchos mexicanos esperaban otra clase de informe, tal vez que informara que ya no trabajarían, que el cheque les llegaría por correo y cosas así, sobre todo la opinión de los que trabajan detrás de un escritorio y que nunca salen a la calle a tomar un rayo de sol. También, hubieron opiniones muy favorables. Los detractores o malos mexicanos, hablaron y dieron su punto de vista; hubo quien dijo: “lo mismo de siempre”, bla, bla, bla. Pero, existe paz en el país, la inflación está controlada, se desarrollan obras a nivel nacional, el PIB va en desarrollo y sobre todo, todavía se respiran aires de libertad y eso es bueno.

President George Bush’s Front Line Surrogates Inadequate!
One of President G.W Bush biggest problems is that he hasn’t been able to shake off the image of being a puppet for Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense, Don Rumsfield, Colin Powell, Secretary of State and Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor. In addition, the President never did learn to be Presidential. He forgot, or never could accept, the role of being the President of all the country and not just the President of the Republican Party and the Corporate Moguls of the country.

 “Some Bodies That Matter: The Impending Draft as a Moral Crisis for White People”

Lately there have been talks about an impending draft that would force people to serve in the US military and its “war on terror.” With two bills—the H.R.163 and S.89 sponsored by Representative Charles Rangel and Senator Ernest Hollings, respectively—being debated, folks have been scrambling to get their kids conscientious objector (CO) status. Given that if either bill passes, women and college students would be “draftable,” there appears to be a particular urgency to resisting the draft.

A group with strong ties to Republican operatives old and new, and funded by a Texas millionaire, launched an advertising campaign to discredit the service of John Kerry during the Vietnam War, and to question whether or not he deserved the medals and Purple Hearts he received there. It was another shameful display of the worst kind of politics, and a shameful attack on the service record of an American war hero. It was also an insult to all of us who have served our country, and to all those who have seen the toll the battlefield takes on a soldier.

Roy Hoffmann, in 2003 said of Kerry: “I am not going to say anything negative about him - he’s a good man.” In 1996 George Elliot said this of Kerry, “The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is something not to be looked down upon, but it was an act of courage.”
