The Arturo Barrios Invitational will celebrate its 16th year of international running excellence Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Chula Vista Marina. New for this year, Spanish speaking participants can reference the Spanish language version of the website for most event information. Online registration is posted in English, but a Spanish language entry form may be downloaded.
The day’s premier event is the North American 5K Team Championships, featuring world-class elite athletes from Canada, Mexico and the United States, competing for a $25,000 cash prize purse.
The Arturo Barrios Invitational begins with a 5K People’s Run at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 5K People’s Walk at 7:35 a.m. and a 10K People’s Run at 8:30 a.m. The North American Team Championship begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by the Fiesta Kids runs, the one-mile and half-mile races, at 10:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
A “Health & Fitness Expo” will run throughout race day. The expo will feature a variety of the latest in fitness products, running shoes and sports apparel for sample and sale. Over 2,000 pounds of pancake batter will be poured on hot griddles to feed participants and spectators at the always popular and comple-mentary breakfast from Aunt Emma’s Pancake Restaurant.
Live music along the course and local high school cheerleaders will help drive runners to the finish line. Six local high school cheer squads from the Sweetwater Union High School district will vie for the $750 grand prize in the South Bay Spirit on the Course Competition.” All other schools will receive a $250 donation to their cheer program.
A pre-registration party is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Sports Authority in Chula Vista. Olympian Arturo Barrios will be in attendance to sign autographs as runners register for the race and pick up race packets.
