English-Only Latinos Face ‘The Shame’ of Not Speaking Spanish
By David Madrid
SAN JOSE—I just landed a job at a Target store here on the east side of San Jose. On the morning crew, all of us working in the stockroom are Latino, and three-fourths speak Spanish only. I’m one of only two workers who speak only English. Not speaking Spanish has been a problem from day one.

First Person:
Reflections from a men’s retiro
By Heriberto Escamilla
“I didn’t think that I would be this close to a mountain. It’s really beautiful and I am happy to be here.” These are perhaps the most memorable words that I took from the men’s retiro that I attended last week. They were spoken by a round-faced, chubby little boy, approximately 10 years old as he pointed to the closest of the many mountains that grow out of the dry, cactus-covered land of East San Diego County. And indeed we were in the shadow of the mountain, under two massive oak trees. The venerable old giants were strategically positioned, one to the east and the other at the western end of our circle. Like gracious and loving parents with arms outstretched toward each other, they created a canopy of green that sheltered us.At first, the words really didn’t register, but the more that I reflect on them the more I appreciate the spirit they carried.

LA COLUMNA VERTEBRAL

Prestamistas depredadores

Editorials

Editorial:
PROPOSITION 75: Public Employee Union Dues. Restrictions on political Contributions; Employee Consent Requirement.
At the crux of this issue is the perceived undue influence that the Unions have on the political process within the State and ultimately across the nation. And this is an attempt to muffle the voice of the Unions.

Editorial:

Editorial:
Proposition 76: State Spending and School Funding Limits
The argument for yes, on this proposition starts by stating the need to control state spending, declaring California’s budget system as broken, citing record deficits, unbalanced budgets and out-of-control spending. All of which is true. But the real question is how did the state get into such a mess? Was it because of state spending on education?

Editorial:
Proposicion 76: Presupuesto estatal y fondos escolares

National City Spotlight:
Safer Treats For Our Tricksters
By Ted Godshalk
With Halloween coming up later this month, children begin to dream of bags of candy, while a parent’s attention turns to the safety of their young trick-o’treaters. It wasn’t too long ago that parents began to worry about the candy that was dropped into the plastic jack-o-lantern or pillowcase. All Halloween candy was, quite simply, suspect. Scares, and not the shriek and boo kind, but instead the serious public health sort, began to crop up in the 70’s with razor blades in apples. Later, tampered-with Tylenol taught us about the vulnerability of common shelf items. Today candy is back in the headlines, and the threat to our children’s health is more hair-raising than ever.
