Southwestern College Concert Choir Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign With 33rd Annual Pops Concert

CHULA VISTA –The Southwestern College School of Arts and Communication is proud to present the 33rd Annual Pops Concert featuring Chamber Singers and the award-winning Concert Choir. Scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. in Mayan Hall, the anticipated musical event will be directed by Dr. Teresa Russell and will feature accompanists Mary Jane Moore and David Castel de Oro.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors, and $5 for groups of 20 or more. Tickets can be purchased at the Mayan Hall box office, at 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista, or by calling 619-482-6367.

This year’s concert is extra special in that it serves as a kickoff for the Southwestern College Concert Choir’s fund-raising campaign – Concert Choir Heads to Paris, France, 2003. The Concert Choir has been invited to represent the state of California in Paris, France for the 2003 American Celebration of Music. The group is looking to raise $60,000 to send 65 students to France, where they will perform in Notre Dame, Chartres Cathedral and the American Cathedral. A silent auction and reception to benefit the Concert Choir will immediately follow the Oct. 6 event.

“It is such an honor and a privilege to have been invited to represent California in this acclaimed international event,” says Russell, who has been directing the Concert Choir for 14 years and took the group to Carnegie Hall in 2000. “What makes it even more special is the circumstances – to finally get the chance to perform in such an esteemed venue is like a dream come true.”

Last year the Concert Choir was invited to perform in the same musical celebration but the events of Sept. 11 prevented them from attending. This year’s trip is scheduled for April 22 through May 1, with the Chartres Cathedral performance slated for April 24, the American Cathedral appearance for April 27th, and the finale, Notre Dame, for April 29.
