The Monterey Jazz Festival is inviting high school big bands, combos, vocal groups and individual musicians from across the country to compete for cash prizes trophies, scholarships, a chair on the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band, and a chance to play at the Monterey Jazz Festival Presented by WorldCom.
The 31st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival High School Jazz Competition, widely regarded as the premier event of its kind, will take place April 6-8, 2001 at the Monterey Fairgrounds, site of the Monterey Jazz Festival, the longest running jazz festival in the world.
In order to enter the Competition, Big Bands, Combos and Vocal Groups must have earned a superior or first division rating at a festival within the last 12 months. All individual musicians are invited to apply; individual musicians do not have to be a member of a band to enter the Competition.
The winning Big Band, Combo and Vocal Group will receive cash awards, invitations to perform at The Mon-terey Jazz Festival, and trophies. Outstanding musicians for each division will receive individual trophies and scholarships. Individual musicians who win a chair on The Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Big Band will join in a two-week performance tour of Japan during late July/early August of 2001 and will play at The 44th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival Presented by WorldCom, September 21-23, 2001.
Deadlines for entries are February 9, 2001 for Big Bands and Combos; February 28, 2001 for Vocal Groups; and April 7, 2001 for Individuals.
