With flu season around the corner, at-risk San Diego County residents can guard against becoming ill this year by getting a flu vaccination. Expected to begin in November, Sharp HealthCare will offer flu shots throughout the community for adults 65 years or older with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart or lung disease. People with questions about whether the vaccine is appropriate for them should contact their personal physician.

Sharp HealthCare will offer the vaccinations in conjunction with a community-wide flu awareness campaign being sponsored by Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP), a collaborative effort to the health care community dedicated to improving the health of San Diego residents.

If you are allergic to eggs or you are already ill, please consult your physician before receiving a flu shot. Appointments will not be needed and an optional donation of $2 will be suggested.

Conference Examines Value of Spirituality to Seniors

Many polls indicate that the majority of older Americans believe in some form of spirituality. Many profess that their health and sense of well-being is often related to their beliefs.

Yet health and social service professionals frequently ignore this topic when evaluating the concerns of elderly clients, possibly missing an important element in the assessment and treatment of their clients.

The County's Aging & Independence Services joins with Lifeline Health Care, Inc., the Stein Institute for Research on Aging, UCSD, and Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego to present "Introduction to Spirituality and Aging," an educational opportunity for providers of services to older adults.

The free workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the War Memorial Building, 3325 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park.

CEUs will be offered by Southern Caregiver Resource Center. Continental breakfast will be provided.

RSVP by Nov. 9 to Tracy Hudson, Aging & Independence Services, 9335 Hazard Way, San Diego, 92123, or by calling Coty Benrimoj at (858) 534-6299.

The Cathedral Choristers of Men and Boys will join the cathedral clergy and flag bearers from the United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force in a service to honor the men and women who have served their country with distinction, and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces. A reception in the Great Hall will follow the service.
