SYHC Opens Second Dental Clinic to Meet Increased Demand for Improved Oral Health in South Bay Communities

San Ysidro Health Center (SYHC) held an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its second dental clinic in the South Bay. The South Bay Family Dental Center located at 2 North Euclid Suite A in the National City Plaza will help address children’s urgent oral health needs identified in a survey conducted by SYHC in 2000, which revealed an existing children’s oral health epidemic in the South Bay’s medically underserved communities.

Numerous dignitaries attended the ceremony to express their support for the dental clinic and the services it provides to the South Bay communities. Proclamations were provided by dignitaries recognizing that the opening of the facility is an important first step in addressing the immediate oral health needs of children from an early age and educating their parents about proper oral health care.

The clinic serves residents in the communities of National City, Chula Vista, and San Ysidro who have Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and private insurance, as well as those who do not have medical/dental insurance. The facility provides oral health services to children ages infant to 13, but will eventually expand coverage to adults.

The clinic is a six-chair facility with state of the art equipment, including digital x-ray capabilities and an intra-oral camera. Currently staffed by one pediatric dentist, Oscar Rivera, D.D.S., the new dental center is expected to add at least one, possibly two, dentists in the future. The staff also includes three registered dental assistants.
