A new UCSD Veterans Association will install its first officers November 9, in a campus ceremony that will honor UC President Richard Atkinson for his effort to designate Veterans Day as an official UC employee holiday.
The ceremony is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Sequoia Room of the Muir College Commons on the UCSD campus.
San Diego County Board of Education member Nick Aguilar, Director of Student Policies and Judicial Affairs at UCSD, will be named President of the new campus Veterans Association.
Scheduled to speak at the ceremony is Congressman Bob Filner, the ranking Democrat on the Benefits Subcommittee of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. In addition to the Atkinson recognition, UCSD Assistant Vice Chancellor Rogers Davis will be recognized for his effort in establishing the Veterans Association at UCSD as an official campus organization.
Aguilar conducted a 14-month campaign, contacting each member of the region's state and federal legislative delegation, to see the holiday established. That campaign came to fruition in February, with Atkinson's announcement that the UC system would officially designate November 11 as a holiday.
"I feel very gratified that the University of California has recognized the importance of correcting this long-standing omission," Aguilar said, "and I'm especially pleased that UCSD veterans have been given support by the Chancellor to establish the Veterans Association at UCSD."
Aguilar, who was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, started his effort for official UC recognition of Veterans Day in December 1998 with letters to Atkinson and John Davies, Chair of the UC Board of Regents. He wrote the two after serving as speaker at the UCSD inaugural ceremony to commemorate Veterans Day.
