Five Clowns Play

The masked play of Kosong Village in South Kyongsan Province is known as `Ok-wangdae' or `Five Clowns Play.' Taking the stage, consisting of drama, dance and song, the five clowns represent the five cardinal directions of east, west, south, north and the center. The Kosong Okwangdae features geometrical leaning movements and exciting improvisational rhythms. Above all, its most attractive feature is the energetic dance movements of the male performers. The Five Clowns Play will be presented on Sunday, November 4 at UC San Diego's Mandeville auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 858-534-TIXS.

On November 7th, making the rare appearance is Brazil's reigning diva Virginia Rodriguez. A singer, born in extreme poverty, she was brought up by her street vendor mother. As she grew up it became obvious that she was gifted and was nurtured through informal training by caring school teachers and spent her youth singing in both Protestant and Catholic church choirs. Today, her persistence, sensitivity and unique voice has brought her from the mean streets of Bahia to the world's finest stages.
