Encuentros Leadership of North San Diego County presents the 1st Annual Career Exploration and Educational Conference for Latino boys. Presentations on careers, succeeding in school, information about local colleges, and small group sessions delivered by prominent Latino males are just some of the activities planned. Keynoting the event is Oceanside Councilman and Vice-Mayor, Rocky Chavez. Also on the program with welcoming remarks, is CSU, San Marcos President Haynes.
The conference will be held June 5, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at California State University San Marcos, located at 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road.
Latino boys from local North County middle schools and high schools are invited to attend this free event. On-site supervisors will be available for those who come unattended by a school representative. In addition to motivational and informative sessions, the event will feature door prizes and giveaways as well as a continental breakfast and lunch.
Encuentros Leadership of North San Diego County is a non-profit organization whose mission is enhancement of community systems to encourage and support boys of Latino descent to make their place in America’s future through optimal performance in education. The organization was started in mid-2003 in an attempt to curtail the escalating dropout rate of Latino boys from North County middle schools and high schools. Encuentros Leadership is guided through the volunteer efforts of a 12-member Board of Directors.
The 1st Annual Expo and Conference is sponsored by CSU, San Marcos - College of Education, MiraCosta College, and Palomar College - Gear Up Program. Several other organizations and individuals interested in improving the educational outcomes for Latino boys have contributed toward the successful launch of this conference. Parent consent forms must be signed and turned in prior to the event. These forms are available at most middle and high school sites in North County. Seating is limited to 350.
