Twelfth “Festejando a las Madrecitas” Celebrates Mother’s Day in the Latino Tradition

On Sunday, May 12, the community of Carlsbad hosts the 12th annual Festejando a las Madrecitas, (Festival of Beloved Mothers) celebrating Mother’s Day through the arts. The event is free and takes place in Holiday Park, on Pio Pico Avenue between Carlsbad Village Drive and Chestnut Avenue. The festival begins at 12:00 noon and ends at 6:00 p.m. At Festejando, children are encouraged and assisted in expressing their love for their mothers through the arts; artist-led crafts activities for children are provided. Entertainment, awards honoring Carlsbad mothers, and free flowers and cake are all part of this unique family celebration.

Festejando performances begin at 12:30 p.m. Children’s performing groups include Carlsbad High School Folk-lorico Ensemble, Head Start Little Dancers, Helen Allman Youth Center Line Dancers and more. Professional music groups include Mariachi Mex-icano from 3:30 to 5:30. The Carlsbad City Council will honor longtime Carlsbad mothers for their contributions to the community. The Mexican-American Association will sell carne asada taco plates and Carlsbad High School MEChA will sell fruit bowls all day. Families may bring picnics and should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

Festejando a las Madrecitas is sponsored by a coalition of neighborhood service organizations, including the Carlsbad Arts Office, Mexican-American Association of Carlsbad, Helen Allman Youth Center, Carlsbad High School MEChA and the Fiesta del Barrio Association. As a free community-wide event, Festejando receives support from a variety of local businesses.
