Cal State San Marcos Students Partner With City of Escondido for Community Resource Faire May 11

On Saturday, May 11, Escondido residents will have the opportunity to learn more about their community and what it can offer them during the We Love Children and Families! Escondido Civic Faire, being hosted by the City of Escondido and Cal State San Marcos from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Grape Day Park at 321 North Broadway. The university’s involvement in the event is sponsored in part by a Cesar Chavez Service and Learning Grant from the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerims (GO SERV).

The faire will open at 10 a.m. with remarks from Escondido mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler and Cal State San Marcos president Alexander Gonzalez.

More than 65 organizations and agencies are expected to provide information about a variety of services and resources related to health care, child care, recreation, education, cultural arts, public services and voter registration. Residents will also learn about opportunities to volunteer with a variety of organizations and social service providers.

Fun events are also planned for the entire family, including music by local children’s groups; karate, skate, and dance demonstrations; crafts and activities for children; displays of fire and police vehicles, and free tours of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, and city council chambers.

This citywide event began as a service-learning project in the Cal State San Marcos First-year Student Learning Community. Under the guidance of Professor Joanne Pedersen, 28 freshmen spent the past two semesters learning about what goes in to creating a healthy community. Initially, they planned to work with the City of Escondido to hold a smaller civic faire for students and families in the Grant Middle School neighborhood. But, as the project developed, the city officials were so impressed with the model that they decided to broaden the event to serve as many citizens as possible.

The students have been involved with every aspect of planning, from selecting and notifying vendors, lining up entertainment, raising funds, and organizing a voter registration campaign.
