Filipino Cultural Exhibit

Beautiful and colorful Filipino arts and crafts are now on display throughout the Oceanside Public Library, including woodcarvings, lovely traditional clothing, dolls, and other decorative objects. The exhibits are located are located on both floors of the Civic Center Library as well as the Mission Branch. They will be on display throughout June 15.


Kid’s Day

* Families and children are invited to participate in a day of free fun and activities; including face painting, arts and crafts, a petting zoo and exciting live entertainment. May 11th at the Mira Mesa Community Park. For more information please visit www.harmonium-inc.org.

* At Balboa Park Museums - Free ballet classes for kids 5 and older 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.; Make a funky floral hat 11:00 - 2:30 p.m.; Create sound generating flowers with Reuben H. Fleet Science Center; Make a bright, blooming dino headband at the San Diego Natural History Museum; join the fabulous Ms. Frizzle as she teaches kids some cool floral facts; Create paper flowers at Spanish Village; Make a train book at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum; Design origami flowers at the Japanese Friendship Garden 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and lots more activities for everyone.

Local Prodigies and Dr. Seuss

On May 12, San Diego Symphony presents Dr. Seuss “My Many Colored Days,” as well as the winners of the Symphony’s annual youth virtuoso competition, Hot Shots, as part of its Family Festival Series. The animation will projected onto a large screen above the San Diego Symphony as it performs this sure-to-be-a-classic children’s composition. Concerts will be held at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street, downtown. To purchase tickets call 619-235-0804. Coppélia

San Diego Civic Youth Ballet will present “Coppélia” beginning Mother’s Day weekend at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park. Considered the comedy of the classical ballet world, tells the story of the mysterious and cantankerous Dr. Coppelius and his magical toyshop where life size dolls come to life. Performances are May 12,18, 19 at 2 p.m. and May 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park. Tickets are $12 orchestra and $10 Loge. For additional information call 233-3060.

Mexican Folk Art

Handcarved animals, vibrant ceramics and textiles, whimsical masks and imaginative human images are all showcased in the San Diego Museum of Man’s new “Hecho in Mexico” exhibit, opening Sunday, May 12 and continuing through February 2003.

This major exhibition features more than 900 pieces of hand crafted Mexican folk art from the Museum of Man’s extensive collection, the largest of its kind outside Mexico. From objects made exclusively for sale to tourists to homemade toys to finely crafted collectibles such as handwoven textiles, glistening copperware, laquerware, ceramic vases and traditional tree-of-life images.
