“Festejando a las Madrecitas” Returns: Fourteenth Annual Mother’s Day Celebration

On Sunday, May 9, the community of Carlsbad hosts the 14th annual Festejando a las Madrecitas, (Festival of Beloved Mothers) celebrating Mother’s Day through the arts. The free event takes place at Holiday Park on Pio Pico Avenue and Chestnut Avenue. The festival begins at 12:00 noon and ends at 5:00 p.m. City Council Member ann Kuchin will present awards honoring specially nominated Carlsbad mothers for their contributions to the community. Music by Mariachi del Sol, Dancing with DJ Gil, performances by local youth groups and free flowers for mothers and cake for everyone are all part of this unique family celebration.

Festejando encourages children to use the arts to express their love for their mothers. Children’s poems and letters are exhibited. Artist-led crafts activities take place all afternoon. Youth group performances begin at 12:30. Mariachi del Sol (the locally renowned Irish-American Doyle family) plays traditional Mexican music at 2:00 p.m. Awards to Honored Mothers are presented at 3:00 pm. Dancing with DJ Gil to norteño, tex-mex and golden oldies occurs from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Families should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and plan to picnic. The Mexican-American Association and Fiesta del Barrio Carlsbad Association will sell carne asada tacos and tamales and each person receives a free piece of cake, contributed by Ralph’s Stores.

Festejando a las Madrecitas is sponsored by a coalition of neighborhood service organizations, including the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office, Mexican-American Association of Carlsbad, Fiesta del Barrio Carlsbad Association, and Helen Allman Youth Center. Festejando receives support from Ralph’s Stores and the Flower Man on Carlsbad Boulevard.
