New Vision for Old Town Fiesta Cinco de Mayo 2001:
A Celebration of History, Art, commerce and Culture

Cinco de Mayo in Old Town San Diego is considered the best in town, but this year's 18th annual Mobil Old Town Fiesta Cinco de Mayo offers something special and new for families and kids alike - a fascinating celebration of our region's rich culture and history.

This year's event unveils the Old Town Mercado, an open-air venue modeled after a 9th century Mexican market place. Businesses, community groups and arts organizations will showcase interactive exhibits that trace the development of the region's culture and commerece.

"Through the Old Town Mercado, San Diego's history will come alive. It's a great way to promote the arts, culture and industries of California and San Diego," said event organizer Michael McLaughlin. "It's part of an exciting, new vision for this event."

The three-day party kicks off Friday night with salsa dancing and a performance by the Flamenco Ballet. A variety of ethnic cuisine will be available the entire weekend from the 33 Old Town restaurants and 13 select restaurants will offer 52 different "Fiesta Favorite" margaritas.

"We have three days of music and entertainment on eight stages, authentic Mexican food and margaritas, restaurant "party patios" with live entertainment and, of course, the re-enactment of the 1862 Battle of Puebla," said McLaughlin.

Just a few of this year's 2000 entertainers are: Jose Serrano & Quino, a Latin and salsa music group; Joselito, a contemporary Latin dance group that plays original hip hop and rap; the traditional Latin music group, Marachi Real; Familia Rojas, famous for their amazing rope tricks; and Escaramuzas Golondrinas, well-known authentic female equestrians.
