Palomar College Cheerleaders Win First Place in National Competition

San Marcos — Palomar College's cheer squad recently won the first place trophy at the USA Collegiate Nationals in Las Vegas, NV.

The 22-member team has also raised the funds to travel and compete in the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) competition April 5-8 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Some of the squad members already know about travel. Wes Calland came to Palomar from Vancouver, Canada. Karen Hein traveled all the way to San Marcos from Baltimore, MD. Ryan Hardy is from Colorado Springs, CO.

Four other squad members are Californians who live outside San Diego County: Sandy Sherman, Wildomar; Amada Zorick, Sun Valley; Aaron Martin, Canoga Park; and Shaun Eisenthal, Agoura.

County residents on the team are: Jason Allison, Chris Blench, Chrissy Hellman and Sara Steinback, Escondido; Jaime Arroyo, Sal Davila, Amanda Escobar and Quinn Summa, Vista; Athena Bryan, Rancho Bernardo; Jessica Gremett, Jeremy Pecoraro, and Eric Somers, San Marcos; Shannon Stolz, Ramona; Michelle Servin, Carlsbad; and Marina Martinez, Oceanside.

Coached by Paul Groom and Tim Passalacqua, two former Palomar cheerleaders, the team practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 11 p.m. For more information, interested persons may call the student affairs office at Palomar, (760) 744-1150, ext. 2594.
