Scott Delgadillo's Memory Lives On

Deborah Lawrence Strives To Raise Money To Make Good On Her Promise

Scott Delgadillo lost his fight with Leukemia on January 29, 2001. He was 14 years old. Many San Diegans followed the media coverage that detailed his battle and knew of his love for the University of Notre Dame. The amount of people that Scott's story touched are countless. One of those people, Deborah Lawrence, visited Scott the evening of his death and made a special promise. "I promised I would continue his fight against a disease for which we have not yet discovered a cure," said Lawrence.

For this reason, Lawrence is once again running for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Woman of the Year - which she won in 2001. The Woman of the Year Campaign is an eight-week fundraising campaign waged by business people and community leaders to support the society's research for a cure, patient assistance, education and patient advocacy programs. The "winners" of the event are the man and the woman who raise the most money during this eight-week period. The eight-week period begins Tuesday, March 26th and ends Wednesday, May 29th.

"Deborah and Scott formed a unique bond. She was inspired by his strength, courage, and determination to beat leukemia. It was these thoughts that prompted her to make a promise to him to continue his fight against leukemia to help find a cure! I know Scott is cheering her on," said Scott's mom, Carmen Delgadillo.

"Whenever someone asks me why I'm doing this, I simply say it's because I made a promise to Scott and I want to make sure that I'm doing everything in my ability to see that it comes true," said Lawrence.

Out of every ten children that are diagnosed with leukemia, two do not make it. Because leukemia research is considered to be a window to the treatment and cure for all cancers and AIDS, a cure for leukemia would aid in curing all.

If anyone would like to give to Deborah Lawrence's campaign, please make checks payable to "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" and please make sure to note that it is for the Deborah Lawrence campaign.
