NASSCO and the San Diego Foundation Donate Playground to Mercado Apartments

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) and the San Diego Foundation have donated a new playground to the Mercado Apartments in Barrio Logan. The Mercado Apartments is a national-award-winning, 144-unit affordable-housing complex that opened eight years ago. Built in the historical core of the Latino community, Mercado Apartments provides an affordable, attractive, safe environment for its residents.

At a dedication ceremony hosted by the MAAC Project, developer and owner of the Mercado apartments, NASSCO and the San Diego Foundation were recognized for having provided the funding for Mercado's new playground, which will be enjoyed by more than 150 grammar-school-aged children who reside there.

According to Roger Cázares, MAAC Project's President & CEO, "The generosity of NASSCO and the San Diego Foundation is a prime example of the power of collaborations between the private sector and community-based organizations. These partnerships build communities, enrich our neighborhoods, empower our residents, and elevate the quality of life of those we serve."

"NASSCO has been a neighbor of the Barrio Logan community for more than half a century," added Richard Vort-mann, President of NASSCO. "We have been active in supporting Barrio Station, the Logan Heights Family Health Center and Logan Elementary School. The donation to build a playground for the Mercado Apartments is part of our continuing effort to reach out and be a `neighbor of choice' for the citizens of this area."

"We are proud to support this important project," said Bob Kelly, President & CEO of the San Diego Foundation. "The family who we worked with to make this grant had been doing work in the community already, but our research staff was able to make them aware of this particular need. We are very pleased to be able to provide this playground to Barrio Logan."
