Library Offers 24/7 Reference Service Through Internet

The Chula Vista Public Library is now offering 24/7 Reference service as a pilot project to library patrons. This web-based technology uses a highly developed set of software tools to communicate and collaborate directly with on-line patrons. Using 24/7 Reference, a library patron can receive help in finding answers to their questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"Because people are increasingly using the Internet to obtain information —often needing it when our libraries are closed— this 24/7 Reference service allows a patron to talk with a reference librarian using a built-in chat function," said Community Relations Manager Nora McMartin. The virtual librarian uses the collaborative browsing tool to guide the customer to a web site, power point presentation, a text file, or other electronically accessible database. After a session, the patron is automatically e-mailed a transcript of the session and all the websites visited.

The icon is on the library's web site This service will allow our on-line patrons to simply click the "Ask the Librarian 24/7 Online Reference" service icon to begin an interactive session with a reference librarian. For more information, call (619) 691-5069.
