Boxer Features California Missions on Senate Website

Highlights missions’ history, contributions to state

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced today that she has launched a special webpage highlighting Cali-fornia’s 21 missions. The webpage will be a permanent addition to her online office.

“I am delighted to launch a website to pay tribute to California’s historical missions,” Boxer said. “With their magnificent architecture and rich history, our missions attract millions of tourists every year. I invite Californians to visit my website and learn more about these landmarks and their contributions to our state’s rich heritage and culture.”

The website includes the missions’ histories, links to other websites about Califor-nia’s missions, and information about Senator Boxer’s bill, the California Missions Preservation Act, which would provide $10 million to help fund the restoration and repair of the state’s missions. The link to the legislation includes its text and an endorsement letter from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“California’s missions represent some of our state’s greatest treasures, and yet, many of them are in dire need of repair,” added Boxer.  “Passage of my California Missions Preservation Act would be an important step toward restoring our missions before it is too late. I hope that my website will help raise awareness about the importance of preserving our missions.”

The page is located at http://boxer.senate.gov/missions/index.cfm and may also be accessed by following link from Senator Boxer’s home page, http://boxer.senate.gov.
