CARLSBAD - The North County Latinas Association (NCLA) will hold its 10th Anniversary Adelante Mujer Conference on April 6th, 2002 at Palomar College in San Marcos. This year's theme is "Latinas... communicating and educating, moving forward and taking action".
Adelante Mujer means "forward woman" and that is exactly what this conference is designed to do _ tell our youth to "go forward". NCLA recognizes that Latinas account for more than half of the student drop out rate in San Diego. Our objective is to encourage young Latinas to stay in school, graduate and be prepared for the opportunities which lead to a successful career.
This year the conference will host over 800 12-18 year old North County Latinas and their mothers to over 25 workshops and presentations given by professional Latinas in their fields of expertises. With a special feature being the awarding of merit scholsrhips to middle and high school students.
This year's High School Scholarship Recipients are: Karanne Tucker - Carlsbad High; Nancy Arrellano and Elizabeth Negrette - Oceanside High, Paloma Rocha and Diana Urbina - Organge Glen High; and Andrea Meza from San Pasqual High School.
Middle School Scholarship recipients are: Janet Perez, Marisol Solano and Angela Castro - Lincoln; Ana Rojas and Patricia M. Benitez - La Paloma; Teresa Perez and Lucierto Zavala - Del Dios; Amanda Cisneros - San Marcos; and Ariana Fierro from Hidden Valley.
