March Activities

Businesses on San Diego Bay extend an invitation to come out and play on the Big Bay, with a beautiful outdoor setting along picturesque waters. The Maritime Museum has a new exhibit opening March 8, a “Race for the Riches” aboard the Star of India. This exhibit focuses on the historical, maritime and sociological aspects of trade with the Far East. Artifacts will include early charts, documents, navigation instruments, ship portraits, harbor views and models of Chinese and western ships.

Arts and Crafts weekend rolls into town March 7-9 at the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal with more than 50 exhibitors displaying a broad spectrum of antique and contemporary style furniture, metalwork, pottery, rugs, jewelry paintings, and other fine artwork. Birding Skills Workshop at the Chula Vista Nature Center on Saturday, March 15. The 4-hour workshop starts at 10 a.m. and will provide bird watching tips to better appreciate and identify San Diego’s birds. For more information call 409-5903.

The California State Barbecue Championship takes place on Saturday, March 15 at the Imperial Beach Dunes Park. A blend of smoked meats and sea breeze should provide an interesting aroma as the 20 top barbecue teams heat up their coals for the competition.

First Major Exhibition

On March 8, the San Diego Museum of Art opens the first major exhibition in this country to focus exclusively on the rich artistic heritage of colonial Mexico during the Spanish Viceregal period (1521-1821) Titled The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico: Treasures from the Museuo Franz Mayer, it will feature painting and sculpture. With the exhibition will be a film series presenting three different views of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, lectures and gallery talks, and a two-day symposium (March 28-29) where various experts will share their insights on the history, art, and culture of the period. Concert Dedicated to Women

Award-winning Latina opera singer who became mariachi and bolero singer/composer, Juanita Ulloa, will be performing in San Diego at Centro Cultural de La Raza in Balboa Park next Sunday March 8 at 8pm. Her concert called “Latinas” honors Latina women and is being performed to commemorate International Women’s Day. She will first accompany herself on the piano with percussion by Roy Gonzalez, and then with the Mariachi Chula Vista.

Nicaragua Pottery

Nicaraguan Pottery and Peruvian Clay Instruments will be on display March 12 through March 22, at the World Beat Cultural Center, in Balboa Park. This show features a cross section of work of Nicaraguan potters including clay dolls and hand built sculptural pieces from the women of Loma Panda, utilitarian ware from the Ducuale Grande women’s collective, and ceramic jewelry and contemporary and pre-Columbian replicas from the village of San Juan de Oriente.

Puppetry

The San Diego Guild of Puppetry proudly presents Perry Alley Puppets in “Puss in Boots.” A dozen hand puppets in gorgeous costumes are introduced by break dancing, rapping cat.
