Venezuelan Independence Day Celebrations

On Saturday, July 3, 1999 the House of Venezuela, based in San Diego, California, will host our sixth annual Venezuelan Independence Day celebration & picnic at Tidelands Park in the island of Coronado. The event begins at 11:00 am and ends at 7:00 pm. It will feature dance & live music from Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil as well as typical Venezuelan food, beverage and activities for kids and adults alike.

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Live acts planned include a trio headed by the harpist Carlos Murillas, playing Venezuelan/Paraguayan harp, cuatro and maracas; The "Samba Kids," a riveting Brazilian samba school with more than 20 middle school aged percussion performers on surdo, caiza, tambourines and a-go-go from all over San Diego county, directed by Mark Lamson, musical director for the group "Sol E Mar"; Throughout the day there will be a master of ceremonies and entertainment provided by DJ Israel Rodriguez from East Coast Productions, a popular Dominican DJ that promotes local Latin dance parties throughout Southern California —selections will include salsa, merengue, vallenatos, montunos, gaitas, son, guarachas, plenas, cumbias, soca and reggae.

Of course, no event of this magnitude would be complete without Venezuelan food -for sale there will be typical Venezuelan fare including plantains, arepas, fried yuca, black beans, seasoned rice, shredded beef, tamarind juice and refreshments.

So come join the Venezuelan community for its Independence Day Celebrations in the island of Coronado, across the bridge from San Diego.
