Parents United by Tragedy Work To Stop Teen Violence
Two guardians brought together by tragedy and now working to end youth violence highlight this year's 2nd International Conference on Character Education at the University of San Diego from June 25 to 27.
Azim Khamisa's only son, Tariq, a pizza delivery person, was killed by Tony Hick in 1995. Hicks, now in prison, has brought his guardian and grandfather, Plez Felix, and Azim Khamisa together. Their message to youth is to choose peace over violence. Khamisa and Felix will give the keynote address Tuesday, June 27 at 8:30 a.m.
The conference will bring educators and administrators together to discuss how character education programs can replace the violence and negativity to common among today's youth with values of self-respect, honesty and civic participation.
Other conference activities include in-depth workshops on the best practices for creating, implementing and evaluating character education programs, as well as specific sessions focused on ending youth violence. For further information phone 619-260-4682.

A Briefing on Beijing+5 a Special Session on Women
Having just returned from New York City, where the United Nations held its first Special Session on Women, Gracia Molina de Pick will be providing a Briefing on Beijjing +5 this weekend.
This historic Special Session, attended by women from 180 countries, confirmed that although there has been some progress towards the betterment of women on a worldwide basis, each nation has much work to do to meet the expectations of the Beijing Platform for Action.
In particular, the United States received several low marks from US Women Connect, the umbrella NGO for the USA, the lowest mark being an "F" in Women and Poverty. ("F's" were given where there has been "total inaction or negative impact".)
A brief report of the Federal Report Card and copies thereof will also be given at the Briefing this Saturday, June 24th, 10:30am - Noon, at the Women's History Reclamation Project, 2323 Broadway, Suite 1077, San Diego.
