On June 24, 2004 FightNiteSanDiego.com will once again present an exciting evening of live boxing for the San Diego community. The promotion looks to carry the momentum it picked up from its Brawl at the Hall series, by invading historic Swiss Park, located in the City of Chula Vista. No stranger to hosting boxing events. The new venue will mark the jump start to the promotion’s Coors Light Boxing Series.
Our last show was such a success. We had close to 900 in attendance, standing room only. It was definitely time to move to a new, larger venue, and Swiss Park fit the bill. Interestingly, this venue has hosted great boxing events in the past. In its day, Swiss Park saw the likes of former world champions Jesus Salud, Cesar Soto, and current pound for pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr. We’re very pleased with bringing boxing back to this historic site, and we’re sure the fans will enjoy it, stated Bobby DePhilippis, the promotion’s senior advisor.
Summer Clash, a five bout card, will feature Chula Vista’s, young, smooth boxing lightweight prospect, Ernest Too Slick Johnson (14-0, 5 KOs) against young, aggressive, Los Angeles prospect, Roberto Santacruz (13-2, 4 KOs) in the main event of the evening. Johnson, a local favorite, has looked sensational in his first fourteen fights and hopes to continue his winning ways as he takes a step up in class. Santacruz, who has only tasted defeat twice via close decisions at the hands of two hot prospects with a combined record of 18-2 (12 KOs), is currently riding a nine fight win streak. Adding to the intrigue of this match-up is the fact that in three of those nine victories, Santacruz blemished the records of three previously undefeated fighters. Santacruz will be at full strength looking to add Johnson to that list.
The semi main event will showcase Spring Valley’s Rafael Ramirez (14-3-2, 4KO’S) who looks to stay on the right track as he shoots for his fourth consecutive victory. Local recording artist manager, Javier Lugo, who has been the architect of Ramirez’s career, hopes a good outing here gets his fighter in line for a state title opportunity in the very near future. The young Ramirez is a former sparring partner of World Champions “Sugar” Shane Mosley, Jose Luis Castillo and Swiss Park Alumni Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The card will also feature undefeated, hard-hitting heavyweight, Mika The Samoan Destroyer Gergen (4-0, 4 KOs), from Pago-Pago, Samoa. Gergen, a local favorite who has been compared to a young Joe Frazier by the local media, has scored all of his victories with electrifying knockouts, most recently a two round destruction over Salvador Fernetti. Like Gergen, 2001-2003 Armed Forces Champ, Imperial Beach native, cruiserweight, Carlos El Torito Ibarra (3-0, 1 KO), will be aiming to remain undefeated. Ibarra, who brings in a whirlwind crowd pleasing style, has looked impressive in his first three pro bouts, one a four round decision victory on ESPN2 earlier this year. Two other bouts will support the under card.
San Diego County Swiss Club, better known as Swiss Park, is located at 2001 Main Street in Chula Vista, CA, conveniently located off the I-5 freeway. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the kickoff bout begin at 7:00 p.m. plenty of free on-site parking will be available.
