San Diego County Audiences to Get Chance to See Acclaimed Feature Film "Luminarias"

Chula Vista — Media Arts Center San Diego, in collaboration with New Latin Pictures, is proud to present a two-week engagement of the acclaimed feature film, "Luminarias". "Luminarias" (Directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela) will be screened June 30 - July 13, 2000 at CinemaStar Luxury Theaters located at 320 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista, California. "Luminarias" features some of today's hottest Latino movie actors including Evelina Fernandez, Marta DuBois, Angela Moya, Seidy Lopez, Lupe Ontiveros, Liz Torres, Robert Beltran, Sal Lopez, Cheech Marin, and Mike Gomez.

"Luminarias" (1999, USA, 101 min, 35 mm. English) written by Evelina Fernandez, sets out to examine the contemporary struggle of women with identity, independence, sexuality and prejudices through these women's foibles and sometimes humorous life experiences. Their ground zero is Lumina-rias, the place where they come to drink margaritas, "dish", cry and pinch the cute waiter's butt. "Luminarias" is a full tilt boogie fun. It's a chance to catch up with our sisters and the rest of our universal family, but it is not the Latina Waiting to Exhale, no diss meant to Whitney and her girlfriends. Make no mistake, "Luminarias" is quintessentially Latina; From the proud vibrant design of Patssi Valdez' sets and costumes, to the knowing glances that only a veterana's brown eyes can send. It's all about the wonderful, smart, talented and beautiful ladies of "Luminarias".

Media Arts Center San Diego is excited about bringing "Luminarias" back to San Diego after its' successful screening at the Seventh Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival in March 2000. Fred Salas, Film Curator, states "Luminarias has been playing to packed houses in Los Angeles, since May, so we are very happy to be able to give San Diego County audiences an opportunity to see this fun film".

"Luminarias" is brought to San Diego by Media Arts Center San Diego.
