NOTAS POLITICAS

Junio Tres: Time for the Political Games to start…Though, in our neck of the woods, it seems politics have been an ongoing scenario with no end. Pero, we shall begin to turn our political antennas and scrutinize what our over ambitious politicos are saying and doing in their efforts to take control of our political institutions.

Spotted on our radar screen is the recently created “ AfterDowningStreet.Org”, which is a Progressive group one can join and support the Gold Star Families for Peace, Veterans for Peace, Code Pink, Progressive Democrats of America, Democracy Rising, Global Exchange, and other political peace groups and political activist groups. They are all joining in a campaign to impeach President George Bush. Their reason is based on evidence that recently emerged in British memos containing minutes of a secret July 2002 meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his top national security officials. According to the Downing Street Memos, new and compelling evidence indicates that the President of the United States has been actively involved in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the citizens of the United States and Congress over the basis for going to war against Iraq. If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime, under Article II section 4 of the United States Constitution and provides grounds for the House to impeach President Bush. Keep your eye on Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, the Ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, who will launch a formal investigation into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House to impeach President Bush!

Closer to home, the donnybrook between City Attorney Michael Aguirre, who is trying to right the Ship of State, and our lame-duck Mayor, Dick Murphy, aided and abated by Councilman Scott Peters, (Dist. 1), who represents the high-rent area of University City, Councilman Michel Zucchet (Dist. 2), who is too busy being on trial for various legal problems having to do with the Girly shows around town, Councilman Ralph Inzunza, (Dist. 8), who joined in with other City Councilman to make things right with the Strip-club owners, (both may soon be found guilty or may not…But we shall hold back on labeling them in onerous terms until they actually are found guilty). That leaves Toni Atkins (Dist. 3), who cares little outside of the Gay Community of Hillcrest, Tony Young, (Dist. 4), who is very busy trying to square away District 4, which we agree has mucho problemas, what with high unemployment, bad educational opportunities, gang problems, broken homes (His political dish is full), Brien Maienschein, (Dist. 5), who truthfully we don’t hear too much about….He represents people who seem to be well off and happy. Then, there is our heroine Donna Frye, (Dist. 6), who beat Mayor Murphy in the last election. But then, I think the whole world has read about the fiasco in that election, i.e. the un-blacken punch holes, which kept Mayor Murphy in office, much to his present dismay. Finally, there is Councilman Jim Madaffer, (Dist. 7), I really don’t know where he is at in the financial mass the City is in (he is very quiet in his council seat!). At any rate, not to worry, politically, San Diego is a total mess. The City Attorney is trying to bring “Law and Order” to San Diego and force the elected official to carry out their responsibilities….But, to no avail!

PREGUNTA: since Former Mayor Susan Golding had a hand in raiding the City Treasury to finance the Republican Party Convention, during her term of office, shouldn’t she be made to assume her share of the blame for the fiscal mess the City is in?

Pues, Representative Bob Filner (D), has announced that the Democratic Party, as well as Labor organizations, have endorsed him for reelection. Mexican American voters are missing in action! Thus far no groups have fallen over themselves to endorse Congressman Filner. Problemas Mr. Congressman??? Could it be that Juan Vargas is running against him? Could it be that Congressman Filner has been much too busy courting all the wealthy Growers in the Imperial Valley at the expanse of not serving his large Mexican American constituency?? Could it be that Catholic, State Senator, Juan Vargas has begun to vote against the Gay agenda in the State Senate, where his past support had cost him dearly in the Hispanic community?

With Antonio Villaraigosa now the Mayor of Los Angeles, speculation has risen as to whom will replace him as the 14th Council District representative? Well one gentleman, who would probably be a good City Councilman, has opted to remain where he is at. State Senator, Gilbert A. Cedillo has notified all concerned he intends to take care of business at the State Capital and will run for reelection to the State Senate next year! To which we say GOOD! Senator Cedillo hasn’t missed a step in protecting our interests at the State level….He dares to thread in waters that are full of sharks in the interests of our GENTE!
