26 Artists Selected for the Athenaeum’s 11th Annual Juried Exhibition

The Athenaeum’s annual Juried exhibitions are eagerly anticipated by local artists, who know that these shows are among the most prestigious in the area, and cherish the exposure they will receive. The exhibitions are also not-to-be-missed by art collectors with an eye for new talent. The opportunity for artists to be evaluated by local curators and gallery owners has been one of Executive Director Erika Torri’s goals throughout the eleven-year history of this exhibition; and she —and the Athenaeum— take great pride in helping to launch many artistic careers.

This year’s jurors are Mark-Elliott Lugo, Curator, San Diego Public Library, and Tina Yapelli, Director, University Art Gallery, San Diego State University. After reviewing over 700 entries from 170 artists (who must live, work, or have exhibited in San Diego County), they selected 53 works by twenty-six artists.

The chosen artists are: Atara Baker, La Mesa; Joseph Bennett, San Diego; Reed Cardwall, San Diego; Tim Caton, San Diego; Janetmarie Colby, San Diego; Robert R. Ecker, Escondido; Raul Espinoza, San Diego; William Feeney, Encinitas; Peter J. Geise, San Diego; John Halaka, San Diego; C. W. Haney, San Diego; Gregory Martin, Cardiff-by-the-Sea; Patricia Mercado, San Diego; Susan Merritt, San Diego; David Messick, Vista; Kathryn Miller, San Diego; Sidney Miraz, San Diego; Michelle Montjoy, Vista; James Soe Nyun, San Diego; Lisa Olson, San Diego; Sara Rosenbluth, La Jolla; Carol Schiffelbein, Vista; Neil Shigley, San Diego; Maura Vazakas, San Diego; Pitt Warner, San Diego; and W. Haase Wojtyla, San Diego.

As always, the Athenaeum’s Juried Exhibition is an eclectic mix of established artists—some of whom have been in previews juried shows— and emerging artists... as well as an intriguing mix of media. No one who has attended these exhibitions over the years can say there are no surprises!

The 11th Annual Juried Exhibition will be on display at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, from August 3 through August 31, 2002. Everyone is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Friday, August 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It’s always one of the best “art parties” in town!
