The Sixth Annual ¡Viva El Mariachi! Festival brings to San Diego an unforgettable “Mariachi Serenade by the Bay,” a gala concert under the stars featuring four world-class mariachi groups, colorful ballet folklorico, trick roping exhibition, and fireworks display, on Sunday, August 15, beginning at 6 p.m. at Embarcadero Park South, just off of Harbor Drive, behind the San Diego Convention Center.
The 4-hour concert will showcase four mariachi groups, each with its own distinct style: Mariachi Los Reyes de Mexico del Pilón Gonzalez, from Guadalajara, Jalisco, the cradle of mariachi music; Mariachi Campanas de America, from San Antonio, Texas, the leading promoter of maria-chi music in the US; Mariachi Champaña Nevin, our own local stars, and Maria-chi Divas, an all-female ensemble from the Los Angeles area.
Highlighting the festivities will be the unique Mariachi Memorabilia Exhibit on loan from the prestigious Mariachi Heritage Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Sponsored by Citibank, the exhibit is a once in a life time opportunity to view one of a kind memorabilia that is richly identified with the best traditions in mariachi music. Included in the exhibit are: a sarape worn by the legendary Jorge Negrete; two beautiful dresses worn by singing divas Amalia Mendoza “La Tariacuri” and Yolanda Del Rio; a suit worn by Juan Mendoza, “El Tariacuri;” a leather charro suit worn by Vicente Fernandez for the movie “El Arracadas;” a chaquetilla worn by the acclaimed composer/singer Jose Alfredo Jimenez; and a gold plated trumpet that belonged to Jose Martinez, the first trumpeter to play with a mariachi group. These treasures can be seen at the following bank branches of Presenting Sponsor, Citibank: Chula Vista, 352 H Street; San Diego, 755 Horton Plaza; and in Escondido, 1505 East Valley Parkway.
This year, the traditional FREE Pre-Concert Festival will be held at Broadway Pier, at the foot of Broadway Ave. and Harbor Dr., beginning at 12:00 pm., with performances by youth ballet folklorico groups, as well as up-and-coming mariachi groups from South Bay schools mariachi programs, local and regional singers, plus sponsor booths with numerous give-a-aways/product samplings.
