Seventh Annual Music Extravaganza to Feature Famed Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán
For the seventh consecutive year, San Diego music lovers will have the unique opportunity to hear Mexico’s most beautiful musical export under the Southern California summer skies. Presented as “Music Under the Stars” by the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SDCHCC), the seventh annual “¡Viva El Mariachi!” Festival will once again showcase the world’s best mariachi groups in what has become one of the city’s premiere cultural events.
Beginning at 3 p.m. on August 7, with a PRE-concert festival at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, the 2005 “¡Viva El Mariachi!” Festival will provide ample proof of the enduring popularity mariachi music has garnered throughout Southern California and all along the west coast.
The annual “¡Viva El Mariachi!” Festival draws music aficionados from throughout the United States and Mexico, and has grown significantly in scope and prestige through each successive edition. As a San Diego tradition, it celebrates the culture and art of Mexico while highlighting the growth and development of mariachi worldwide. This year, the pre-concert festival complements the event with performances by local mariachi groups, ballet folklorico and “floreo de laso” (traditional rope/lasso tricks) as well as exciting food booths and fun-filled children’s activities.
Beginning at 6 p.m. the festival gives way to the incredible sights and sounds of artists from Mexico and the U.S. This year’s spectacular show, hosted by well-known comedic writer-performers Eugenio Derbez (star of “Derbez en Cuando” and “Derecho al Derbez” television shows) and Rick Najera (creator of LATINOLOGUES), will include performances by Long Beach-based sensation Timoteo “El Charro Negro,” Mariachi Imperial de Mexico, Carmen Treviño as well as The San Diego Symphony.
