Screened at the 2001 San Diego Latino Film Festival, Bloossoms of Fire (Ramo de Fuego) is a dazzling, whirlwind dance of a film, celebrating the extraordinary lives of the Isthmus Zapotecs of southern Oaxaca, Mexico, whose strong work ethic and fierce independent streak-rooted in their culture-has resulted not only in powerful women but also in the region's progressive politics.
The film has been universally praised, since its world premiere at the 2000 San Francisco International Film Festival. It was honored at the 2000 Havana Film Festival with the Premio Coral, known as the "Latin American Oscar," for Best Foreign Documentary about Latin America. The film's director, Maureen Gosling, is best known for her work with independent film/video director, Les Blank.
Cost to attend the Opening Night Reception and film screening is $20 MACSD & AIVF members / $25 non-members. Price includes ticket to 7:15 PM screening of Blossoms of Fire, hors d oeuvres from one of San Diego's finest restaurants, one free drink (beer or wine only), and the rare opportunity to meet guest filmmaker Maureen Gosling.
