William also known as “Poogie” was the first of three sons born to the late Cecil and Erma Hultz. William was born in Los Angeles, Ca. and raised by his Aunt Grace in Lawrence Kansas. William returned to San Diego in 1955. He attended and graduated as one of the first African Americans from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1958.

William played football but was really known all over San Diego for his incredible track and field abilities. He held many records in the high and low hurdles and also the relays. In 1958 he was the CIF State Champion for the High Hurdles. In 1958 he also set the school record in the 180 low hurdles at 18.9. His record remained unequaled for 20 years.

After graduation from high school, William enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served thirteen years. During this time he was married to Lois Westmoreland. To that union was born two beautiful daughters, Kimberly Hultz-Reed and Darcy Hultz-Rutledge. Upon completion of his enlistment William returned to San Diego. He was employed by Fedmart as a Warehouse Supervisor. In 1978 William married Carmen Heredia. To that union was born four fine sons, William, Marcquis, Marcus, Michael and another beautiful daughter, Moniece.

In 1999 William accepted Christ and was baptized at the Highland Park Church in San Diego. In 2001 William moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. On June 18th 2005 he united in marriage with Kellie Appleton.

Poogie was friendly, vibrant, energetic and lived life to the fullest. He loved spending time with his family and friends. The 43rd street, VFW and American Legion were places you find “Poogie” dancing, laughing and having a good time.
