Ballpark Dream Leaves Residents Homeless

By Yvette tenBerge

It is difficult not to fall in love with the six Bautista sisters. As 15 year-old Alejandra holds tightly to seven month-old Itxel, the other sisters play affectionately amongst each other. Giggling, some of the girls take turns sharing their goals for the future.

Five of the six Bautista children pictured: (left to right) Janet, Elythannia (holding Itxel), Alejandra & Lizbeth. Martha not shown.

Janet Bautista, an assertive 11 year-old, matter-of-factly states her plans to become a doctor. She, then, prods her much shyer, 12 year-old sister, Elythannia, into revealing her dream of becoming a teacher. Not to be outdone, nine year-old Lizbeth bounces around the room, her delicate features lighting up as she describes her desire to become a veterinarian who specializes in caring for "little pets."

The Forgotten Meaning of Independence Day
Independence Day, the 4th of July, is the one day set aside for remembrance. It is the one day for Americans to reflect upon and share in the sacrifices made to gain our independence from England. Fourth of July, 2001 came and left without a whimper. It faded into oblivion at the stroke of midnight. Another year without it having made any significant impact on America's 330 million citizens. For most people, it was just another day at the beach.

At this meeting the following concerns were shared with me: lack of information from the administrator regarding programs available to the students, difficulty in obtaining waivers for the biliteracy option, intimidation from administration when parents asked for waivers, lack of due process for parents with complaints about the biliteracy program, and overall lack of support for the biliteracy program at the site.
