“Tenemos mucha materia realmente única y diferente y verdaderamente popular. Flag Across the Nation Exhibit

To celebrate Independence Day, throughout the month of July the Oceanside Public Library is pleased to present two exhibits and a community-participation art project intended to honor our troops, and to help us see patriotism through the eyes of children, all at the Civic Center Library location. The “Flags of Freedom” exhibit of decorated T-shirts is courtesy of the San Diego organization called Flags Across the Nation (FLAGS). This is a traveling exhibit that represents some of the winning art designs selected from the FLAGS “Flags of Freedom” contest for children grades K-6 and printed on T-shirts. As part of the FLAGS exhibit, the public will be able to participate in creating a “Freedom Flag” made from red, white, and blue cloth strips attached to netting arranged in the shape of a flag. Everyone is invited to write messages on the strips, addressed to the troops of Camp Pendleton as a sign of support and appreciation. The Library will also have a Liberty Bell educational exhibit on display. The Civic Center Library is at 330 North Coast Highway in downtown Oceanside.

FLAGS is a non-profit organization founded by Eileen A. Schwartz in direct response to the September 11, 2001, attack on the U.S. She started photographing the American flags that were on display throughout the neighborhoods of San Diego and was joined by family, friends, and community. FLAGS’ activities have grown to include the hanging of patriotic photo & art exhibits (over 30 to date, including 1500 photographs and thousands of children’s patriotic drawings) and the organizing of patriotically-themed educational programs and drawing contests for children, with the assistance of over 150 volunteers to date. The organization promotes patriotism through the arts to unite, educate and enrich the lives of the diverse populations in the U.S. For more information or to get involved, visit www.flagsacrossthenation.org or call (858) 450-9044.

For more information on the Library’s exhibits please call Margaret Guerrero, Cultural Services Librarian at (760) 435-5586. The Library’s Web site is at www.library.ci.oceanside.ca.us
