The Aztec Warrior Project for Peace was founded in memory of my son Jesus Alberto Suarez del Solar Navarro who died on March 27, 2003 during the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq.
The primary misson of this organization is to assist Latino families with children in the military and to advise young people of every ethnicity about the dangers of military recruiters in their schools. During our two years of struggle, we have met many goals such as urging youth to continue their education instead of enlisting in the military to die or kill innocent people. We have also taken humanitarian aid to Iraqi children who are victims of the violence in the nation, including $600,000 worth of medical aid delivered last December.
Now, after much struggle and thanks to the generous efforts of many people, we are finally able to make a dream come true - granting the first educational scholarships to two young Latinos who resisted the recruiters’ assault and opted to continue their studies. The Aztec Warrior Project for Peace will present the scholarships this 4th of July as an example of the real independence that our youth needthe freedom to study.
I invite you to join us on this very special day for these young people and for my family as we make another step toward true equality in our nation.
The award ceremony will be July 4 at 6 p.m., Palomar UU Fellowship, 1600 Buena Vista Drive, Vista, California.
