Deputy Mayor George Stevens hires three additional staff members to serve as Council Representatives in the Eighth Council District. Councilman Juan Vargas vacated the office in December 2000 and a special election will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2001 to fill the vacant Council seat. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will have run-off election on April 17, 2001.
"As Deputy Mayor, I have been overseeing the issues in the Eighth District and continue to meet with residents and business owners," said Stevens. "I believe that hiring additional staff members to assist with constituent concerns to ensure the community will not be without services until the vacancy is filled."
New staff members include:
Yvette Durazo, former Executive Director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, will be responsible for serving the communities of Memorial, Shelltown, and Southcrest.
Laura Ellis, who previously worked as the Office Manager for the San Diego Hospitality Institute for three years, will be providing office management support for District 8.
Eddie Pérez, who served as a Policy Advocate for the Environmental Health Coalition from before joining the District Eight staff, will be the community representative for the neighborhood of Barrio Logan, Grant Hill, Logan Heights, and Stockton.
Additionally, Elena Burton and Jamie Taylor will continue to serve the Eighth Council District constituents.
Elena Burton has worked for the 8th District since 1999 and will assist with the communities of Nestor, Otay Mesa, Palm City, San Ysidro, and the Tijuana River Valley.
Jamie Taylor has served Council District Eight for 4 years and is the staff manager and community representative for Golden Hill, Sherman Heights, and East Village.
