Mayor Dick Murphy announced the City Council's confirmation of the appointment of Javier Saunders to the San Diego County Water Authority Board as a representative from the City of San Diego. The San Diego Water Authority Board is responsible for bringing water to the San Diego region to supplement the local supply, and for allocating such water to member agencies.
Saunders is the assistant director of engineering design at the San Diego Unified Port District. Prior to his work at the Port, Saunders was a senior civil engineer with the City of San Diego's Water Utilities Department. During his twenty-year career in public works, Saunders has successfully managed the design and construction of over $200 million of public improvements including the East Mission Gorge Pump Station and Pipeline, the Dulzura Conduit Raw Water Pipeline, and the expansion of the Otay Water Treatment Plant and the Alvarado Water Treatment Plant and Reservoirs. Saunders also orchestrated the planning and early design of the City of San Diego's Drinking Water Quality Improvement Program, and worked closely with community groups to complete over 40 miles of water and wastewater pipelines.
Saunders, a San Diego native, is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the American Public Works Association. He holds a bachelor's of science in civil engineering from San Diego State University.
Saunders will replace John Fowler who resigned from the board.
