The San Diego Riptide will be holding their final open-player tryout before the 2003 season. The tryout will be on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Orange Glen High School in Escondido. It is located at 2200 Glen Ridge Rd., Escondido, CA 92027. To get there take I-15 to Via Rancho Parkway, east; left at Bear Valley Parkway; right at Glen Ridge.
Cost for the tryout is $40 cash. No checks will be accepted. Registration will start at 8:00am and the workout will begin promptly at 9:00am.
Most of the 2002 Riptide roster, including First Team All-af2 WR/LB Rico Curtis, were “discovered” in the Riptide Open Player Tryout Camps. In 2002, 27 players either came to training camp or eventually played for the Riptide came from open tryouts.
Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner and 2002 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Tommy Maddox played ArenaBall before finding success in the NFL. Other current NFL stars were found at Arena Football open tryouts like Dallas Cowboys kick returner Reggie Swinton and 2003 Pro Bowl selection Michael Lewis from the New Orleans Saints.
“You never know where you are going to find players,” Morris says. “That’s why we do open tryouts. We open training camp in a couple of days and hope to find some great players that were overlooked.”
