Torres Disheartened Over Race Baiting by Republicans on UCLA Campus

LOS ANGELES — California Democrats were recently shocked to learn of Republican students’ overt race bating activities held on the campus of the University of California at Los Angeles, one of most diverse student bodies in the country.

In a recent press release, from the UCLA Bruin Republicans to promote an “Affirmative Action Bake Sale,” young Republicans brought about the use of terms from the bowels of America’s dark and racist past.

At the event held on February 3rd, cookies were being sold at prices dependent on race or gender of the buyer. The bake sale vendors were assigned the names of “Uncle Tom,” “The White Oppressor” and “Self-Hating Hispanic Race Traitor.” Another student was to be assigned the position of “Admissions Officer” and given the responsibility of assigning the cost of the baked goods by determining the buyer’s race and gender.

California Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Art Torres said, “I am deeply saddened and disheartened at the activities of the UCLA Bruin Republicans. Unfortunately, this activity is consistent with the Republican Right’s tactics to engage in race based political discourse.” Torres continued, “We have seen how Republicans have become emboldened by the comments of Ward Connerly, Senator Trent Lott, (R-MS), Congressman Coble’s (R-NC) praise of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and California Republican Party leaders promoting the absurdity that our nation would have been better off had the South won the civil war. It is a shame Republican students at UCLA have chosen to mimic the extreme views of their Republican leaders.”

President of the Democratic Law Students Association, Juan Carlos-Orellana stated, “The Democratic Law Students Association (DLSA) is appalled at the callous nature with which this event was carried out. This event serves only to show that ignorance persists and that all political leaders must continue to work for equal opportunities for all Americans. DLSA condemns in the strongest possible terms this insulting trivialization of the serious issues of race and gender equality. Instead of reducing disparities in education and employment to mere dollars and cents, we call on all political leaders to join in an enlightened discussion on curing the societal ill of inequality in all forms.”

The following was the press release sent out by the UCLA Bruin Republicans:

UCLA Bruin Republicans to Hold Affirmative Action Bake Sale

In an effort to educate UCLA students on the hypocrisy of affirmative action, an issue currently on the Supreme Court docket with the Michigan case, the UCLA Bruin Republicans will be holding an affirmative Action Bake Sale at the bottom of Bruin Walk, Monday, February 3, 2003 from 9 am to 3 pm.

The Bruin Republicans will be selling cookies from Diddy Riese, a Westwood favorite, under the following price structure: Black, Hispanic and American Indian Females: 25 cents Black, Hispanic and American Indian Males: 50 cents White Females; $1.00 White Males and All Asian-Americans: $2.00.

Staffing the Bruin Republicans; table on Bruin Walk will be members playing the following roles: “The Man,” “The White Oppressor,” “The Self-Hating Hispanic Race Traitor,” “Uncle Tom,” and a special “Admissions Officer” who will be in charge of determining each customer’s race, gender, and general level of oppression.

The Bruin Republicans anticipate a strong campus reaction, with possible protests from the African Student Union and MEChA. If campus opposition does not destroy the message of the event, we hope to show students the inherent hypocrisy of assigning exclusive meaning and value based purely on skin color or perceived ethnicity.

Recommended parking for covering the event is Lot 6 at the end of Westwood Boulevard, or parking immediately outside Lot 6 in the Ackerman turnaround.

Any further questions should be directed to Bruin Republicans Chairman Andrew Jones.
