V-Day Comes to San Diego To Stop Violence Against Women and Girls

V-Day is a worldwide movement to stop violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. Since its inception, V-Day has used the arts as a vehicle for activism. V-Day has provided motivation and opportunity for a sweeping, consolidated, worldwide movement that is giving the issue of violence against women high visibility and media attention. V-Day has helped shift the way people perceive their roles in making the world a safe place for women and girls. V-Day San Diego is a local effort within the worldwide context of V-Day's 2002 Worldwide Campaign.

According to Linda Castro and Linda Libby of L2 Productions "It is our sincere hope that V-Day San Diego will raise the level of awareness of the issue in our city, raise money in support of local organizations dedicated to stopping violence against women, and raise the spirits of all who choose to be part of this initiative." V-Day San Diego is planning to hold a benefit performance of "The Vagina Monologues" at Lyceum Stage at Horton Plaza, Tuesday, February 19, 2002, 7:30 p.m. "We are thrilled to be one of over 150 cities around the world participating in the V-Day Worldwide Campaign and are proud to be a part of the V-Day global movement to stop violence against women and girls," Castro and Libby concluded.

"The Vagina Monologues," which was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women's experiences. Based on interviews with a diverse group of hundreds of women — from a Long Island antiques dealer to a Bosnian refugee.

V-Day proclaims Valentine's Day as V-Day until the violence stops. When all women live in safety, no longer fearing violence or the threat of violence, then V-Day will be known as Victory over Violence Day.

The ground-breaking play will once again be performed at the Lyceum Stage at Horton Plaza as part of the V-Day 2002 Worldwide Campaign on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. The performance is sponsored by L2 Productions.
